Queries - Research strategy request
If an AFHS Volunteer can respond with helpful information about various Alberta resource information that is not already found on our website in a single response the advice will be free. If it appears that it will require explicit investigation of up to an hour, you will be notified and there will be an advance fee of $15 required. This can be paid by personal cheque made payable to AFHS. We hope the following questions will help you refine your question and give us the best opportunity to help you without incurring a fee. Only complete the questions for which you have information and which bear on the research assistance for which you'd like help.
If a fee is necessary, exact cost of the service will be identified by the volunteer, after whch you can proceed wih one of four payment options.
We do not do personal research.
Query writing tips:
- We cannot answer overly broad or vague questions, for instance:
- any question that starts out "I need some information about the Grant family..." or "Send me everything you have about the Grant family in Canada..."
- any question locating living individuals
- We cannot answer questions that don't provide enough background detail:
- Any question like "When did my grandfather die?"
Better: "I found my grandfather, James Edward Grant on your list as being buried in Burnsland Cemetery, in 1940. Can you give me more information?" - Any question like "My grandmother died in Innisfail, where was she buried?"
Better: "My mother told me that my grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Watson (nee Grant) died in Innisfail on Sept. 20,1920. How do I find out where she was buried? I searched your web page but couldn't find her."
- Any question like "When did my grandfather die?"
- The more information you send us about what you have and where you have searched, the better, as there is no point in our duplicating your research.
