What is Chinook?

Chinook (ISSN 1192-8190) is the quarterly journal of the Alberta Family Histories Society. It includes articles on using family research sources, library holdings, surname interests and book reviews. Stories of individuals, groups and societies in Calgary or Alberta, as well as those of families from other parts of the world, are included. AFHS memberships paid prior to September each year will include four issues of Chinook.

Chinook, published in October, January, April and July, is distributed to all members of the AFHS and sent to more than 130 different institutions around the world, including Canada, United States, British Isles and Australia.

Submitting an Article to Chinook and Deadlines

Articles from members, friends of the Society or anyone interested in genealogy, family history or regional history are welcome. Articles, whenever possible, should be submitted electronically in text format from a word processor program; however, articles written longhand or typed are also enjoyed. If electronically sent, typeface should be Times New Roman 12 point. Photographs, graphics and artwork should be scanned at 300 dpi (minimum), and sent separately in TIF format. (N.B. If you wish materials submitted by mail to be returned, include a self-addressed stamped envelope of the appropriate size.)

Deadlines: Articles and notices of upcoming events MUST be received two months before publication by the editor; that is, for the:
     October issue, submissions must be received by August 1
     January issue, submissions must be received by November 1
     April issue, submissions must be received by February 1
     July issue, submissions must be received by May 1

We regret that exceptions to deadlines are not possible.

Placing a Surname Connection in Chinook

Over 300 individuals, organizations and libraries around the world receive Chinook. Would you like an interest of yours to reach someone who may be able to help you with your genealogical mystery? If you are a member, you may have two surname connections printed for free each year. Requests by non-members and additional requests by members will be published for $5.00 per entry.
