ST. ARNAUD - Maria Learmouth St. Arnaud, nee McNeill, beloved wife of Armand St. Arnaudof Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Friday, December 5, 1997 at the ageof 69 years. She leaves to mourn, her husband Armand; two brothers, Frank (Francis) ofScotland, Pat (Anne) of Australia; two sisters-in-law, Janet and Betty of Scotland. STANDEN - Cyril Conrad Standen of Langley, British Columbia, formerly of Calgary,Alberta, passed away at the Langley Extensive Care Unit on December 5, 1997, after acourageous battle with cancer, at the age of 93 years. Cyril was born in Oxford-Shire,England and immigrated to Calgary with his family. He took his grade school here inCalgary, later to take up the trade of Blacksmithing. In the year 1920 he becameinterested in repairing spring leaves in automobiles and trucks. With this ambition in mind,he founded "Standens Ltd." in 1924. Cyril served as president of the Company until theyear of 1990. During his lifelong ambition, his main interest to acquire the latest methodsand machinery for manufacturing leaf springs and agricultural components. From the smallblacksmith shop and six people the company has now grown over the years to a complex oftwo hundred and forty-thousand square feet of building and just over four hundred peopleemployed. Cyril always had a great consideration and admiration for his staff which is stillcarried out until this day. He will always be remembered as a giant in the industrythroughout Canada and the U.S.A. Cyril is survived by his family, three grandchildren,Douglas and Diane Kilbourn, Donald Kilbourn, David and Aimee Kilbourn; and fivegreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alec and HelenStanden of Calgary, Reg and Ruth Standen of Langley, British Columbia; a son-in-lawWalter Kilbourn and his wife Eva; a stepson and stepdaughter, Leonard Gates and SharonRuptash; as well as numerous other extended family. Cyril was predeceased by his firstwife Ann in 1968 and second wife Lillian in 1995, a daughter Margaret Kilbourn in 1987,three sisters and three brothers. STANGIER - Mr. Eric August Stangier, dearly beloved husband of Mrs. Margaret Stangier of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on June 30, 1997 at the age of 66 years. Eric was born August 20, 1930 in Calgary. He married Margaret Sinclair on October 20, 1951. Eric worked for the Ravvins family for thirty-three years, and most of that time he was a furniture salesman. He will be remembered for being a generous fun-loving person, with a keen sense of humour. Besides his loving wife, Eric is survived by a daughter Linda Stangier of Calgary; a son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Judy Stangier of Red Deer; and six grandchildren, Sherri, Jason, Melissa, Nicola, Jordan and Landon. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Sheila; and a sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Bill Davidson, all of Red Deer. He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Mabel Stangier and a brother Richard. STAPLES - Henrietta E.V. Staples passed away peacefully at Bow View Manor on Monday, June 23, 1997 at the age of 78 years. She is survived by cousins, Jim Staples of Calgary, Kay Armitage of Miniota, Manitoba and Martha Maharg of Vancouver; also Beth and Richard Hall, and their children, Andrew, Allison and Joey all of Calgary. Henrietta who was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Mary Staples, was born in 1918 in Veteran, AB., moving to Coronation in 1934 and Calgary in 1942. She studied with the Toronto Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto, and received her LRSM and ATTM, teaching music in Calgary for many years. STEAD - Mr. Bert Arthur Stead, beloved husband of Jean Stead, High River, passed away at the High River Hospital on November 21, 1997 at the age of 82 years. STECKLE - It is with a deep sense of loss that the family of Dr. Ward Allan Steckle, a longtime Alberta educator and sportsman, announce his passing on October 24, 1997 at the age of 93 years. Ward is survived by his loving children, daughter Wilma (Terry) Kassian of Edmonton; and Wilma's children, Rob, Wayne (Shelley), and Carol (Les), and his son Bob (Jane) Steckle of Calgary; and Bob's children, Heidi (Cameron), Anna (Scott), and Ward (Jennifer) and their mother Kay. Ward is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Carrie, Shawn, Alicia and Cooper; one sister Norma Davidson of Richmond, B.C.; and a sister-in-law Grace Hume of Edmonton; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends. Ward was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Alberta, in September 1994, and by his sister Hilda and an infant brother Floyd. Ward was born December 30, 1903, in Carstairs, Alberta. His parents, Norman and Emma moved to Edmonton where Ward began his schooling, graduating from Edmonton Normal School in 1923. His post-graduate degrees were obtained from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and the University of Washington in Seattle. A promoter of education, physical fitness, community service and the welfare of others, Ward was an educator of forty-seven years in rural Alberta and Calgary schools. While principal of Western Canada High School, he was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Calgary. He was also names "Sportsman of the Year", by the Calgary Booster Club. Prior to Ward's tenure as principal of Western, he was the city athletic director for public schools. In 1961, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, London, Duke of Edinburgh award. He served two terms on the University of Alberta Senate as well as two terms on the Board of Governors of Mount Royal College. An avid golfer, he served on the executive of Earl Grey Golf Club and was a member of the Glencoe Club, the Rotary Club and the Calgary Stampeders' football games. STEPHEN - James H., born November 16, 1911 in Innisfail, Alberta, died peacefully at home on October 27, 1997. STEVENSON - Annie Carter Stevenson, (nee Tait) of Calgary, passed away at the Sarcee Auxiliary Nursing Home on July 9, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Annie, a native Calgarian, was born on May 19, 1917 eldest daughter of Howard and Katie Tait. She was a resident of the Bearspaw District for thirty years and was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge. Annie was also very active in the Women's Institute in Cochrane. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, John and Margaret Tait of Oliver, British Columbia; two sisters, Mary Juanita McCann of Victoria and Pat Spicer of Calgary; three nieces, Donna and Murray Swales and family of Whitehorse, Yukon, Doreen and Larry Funfer and family of Calgary, Janet and John Porteous and family of Calgary; and four nephews, Clifford and Carol Spicer and family of Stony Plain, Alberta, James and Joan Tait and family of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Johnny Tait of Oliver, British Columbia and Howard McCann and family of Victoria, British Columbia. STEWART - It is with great sadness we announce the death of James Clifford (Stewy) Stewart on June 3, 1997 at Foothills Hospital. He was born in Calgary, June 25, 1932 and is survived by his brother George (Vicky) Stewart; sisters, Dorothy (Dellas) McKee, all of Calgary, and Shirley (Jim) Barby of Vulcan. He will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, their families, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Hedley and Grace Stewart. Stewy was a longtime employee of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, spending most of his time at the Corral and in leisure time volunteering for the Flames. On his retirement in 1994, this volunteering became a full-time position in the Flames organization. During these years he established himself as a well-loved and respected member of the Flames family. Stewy was an avid sports fan all his life, and could be found at various arenas and baseball parks throughout the city. STILES - Myrtle Mary Stiles passed away peacefully at the Bow View Manor on Wednesday, July 2, 1997 at the age of 84 years. Myrtle was the beloved mother of Gilbert (Dorene) Stiles and Dennis (Fay) Stiles of Calgary. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Susan (Tom) Lynch, Todd (Marilyn) Stiles, Lori (Mike) Heidt, Mark Stiles, Carolyn Stiles (Bill Kosich), Dean (Laurie) Stiles, John Stiles, Ann (Dale) Brown, Julie (Trent) Dickson; nine dearly loved great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Connor and McLean Lynch, Ashley and Darren Stiles, Braden, Logan and Myles Heidt, Austin Dickson. She is also survived by her sisters, Gladys (Bob) Wilson, Marjorie (Ernest) Losey, Gene Westcott, Megan Lewis, Mildred (Bob) Taylor, Letha Weyman, Claire (Alan) Hodgson; and her brother Bert (May) Metheral; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members. STOCKTON - Jean, aged 85 years, of Claresholm, passed away June 17, 1997, widow of the late Orley Stockton. She is the beloved sister of Charlie V. STOKES - Amy Bernice, beloved wife of the late George Stokes, passed away peacefully at Vulcan Extendicare, November 6, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Amy was born March 24, 1917 at Armada, Alberta to George and Sara Craine. She received all her education at the Sunny Plains School in Armada. In 1937 she moved with her parents to Springbank where she helped them on the Dairy Farm. She married George "Jim" Stokes on November 29, 1939. Amy and Jim moved to the farm in Armada and raised their family. They farmed until George's passing in 1967. A few years later Amy moved to Calgary. In 1973 she moved to Vulcan where she was very active in the Drop in Centre, Friends and Meals on Wheels. In 1977 Amy returned home to Lomond. She enjoyed oil painting, teaching her granddaughters to knit, games of all kinds, and travelling with relatives and friends. She canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years and was a member of the Armada Community Club for over fifty years. Her door was always open for friends and relatives alike as Amy always made friends easily. She was ready to go anywhere at anytime and was always there to give rides to doctors appointments, go shopping, or for family visits. Time spent watching her grandchildren play hockey or figure skate was very special to Amy. She loved her grandchildren and would do almost anything for them. Amy moved to Vulcan Extendicare where she has resided for the past five years, first at Peter Dawson Lodge and then Extendicare. She will be dearly missed by family and friends far and near. Loving mother of two daughters, Mavis Stokes of Calgary and Tuny (Ken) Hart of Lomond; two sons, Chuck (Arlene) and Norman (Terry), all of Lomond; thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maurine McLeod of Parkland and Myrtle Eriksen of Calgary; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. STROUCKEL - Mr. Frank Sebastian Strouckel passed away at Drumheller, Alberta July 10, 1997 at the age of 70 years. Frank was born on October 10, 1926 in Schuler, Alberta. In 1946 Frank moved with his parents to the Rosebud area where he lived and farmed until his passing. Frank was an Honorary Life member of the Rockyford Knights of Columbus.
