SNIDEMAN - Mrs. Adina Snideman of Red Deer, passed away at the Red Deer
Regional Hospital Centre, on Thursday, June 26, 1997 at the age of 74
years. Mrs. Snideman retired in 1987 after nineteen years with A.G.T.
and was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. She is survived by four
children, Sharon (Jim) Huse and their son Clint of Ponoka, Dan Snideman
and his sons, Micheal and Jonathon, Dick (Brenda) Snideman and their sons,
Devon and Bryan, Lil (Brad) Boulding and their children, Jamie and Patrick,
all of Red Deer; great-granddaughter Taylor Marie Huse; sister Em Crowe
of Calgary; brothers, Ron Shawcross and his wife Evelyn, and Verd Shawcross
and his wife Brenda of Victoria, British Columbia; sister-in-law Opal
Harrison of Calgary; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased
by her grandson Brent Huse. Funeral Services will be held from the "67th
Street Chapel" of the RED DEER FUNERAL HOME on Monday, June 30, 1997
at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Venerable Archdeacon Derek Hoskin. Interment

SNOWDON - Mrs. Jean Bruce Snowdon of Calgary, passed away peacefully,
quietly, and with dignity at the Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday,
October 19, 1997 at the age of 78 years. Jean was born on November 14,
1918 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; the only child of Alex and Martha Douglas.
She attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor
of Arts Degree. Jean met Herb Snowdon during World War II while Herb was
serving in the RCAF. They were married in Coburg, Ontario on August 17,
1944. After Herb returned from overseas, they returned to Calgary where
they raised their four children. Jean was a very active sportswoman throughout
her life and served in many capacities with both ladies golf and curling
associations. Jean also served a term as president of the Canadian Ladies
Curling Association. Jean was honored by the Province of Alberta in 1982
for her contributions to the sport of curling and was also inducted into
Canada's Curling Hall of Fame. Jean played golf at the Turner Valley Golf
Club well into her seventy-seventh year. Jean was an avid bridge player,
enjoying this pursuit right until her admission to hospital in early October.
Mrs. Snowdon is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Claire
of Calgary, and Jim and Debbie of Edmonton; two daughters and sons-in-law,
Lois and Tom Wrightsell of Ottawa, and Nancy and Brian Barr of Edmonton;
nine grandchildren; one brother-in-law Cornelius Snowdon of Edmonton;
and one sister-in-law Cathy Snowdon of Calgary; as well as many nieces
and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Herbert Henry
(Herb) Snowdon in 1985. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS &

Friday, October 24, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with the Right Rev. Gary F. Woolsey

SNYDER - Edith Mary Snyder of Calgary passed away at the Glenmore Park
Auxiliary Hospital on June 12, 1997 at the age of 77 years. She is the
loving mother of two daughters and a son-in-law, Muriel, Norma and Al
Wooldridge, all of Calgary; and two grandchildren, Kimberlee and Melissa.
Edith is also survived by a sister Gladys Fisher of Brandon, Manitoba;
and a sister-in-law Edith Pieper of Kelowna, B.C. She was predeceased
by her husband Norman, as well as three sisters and a brother. Graveside
Services will be held in the Eldon Cemetery north of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba
on Tuesday, June 17, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. with Mrs. Ilene Dowd officiating.

SOBKOWICH - Kenneth. On Tuesday, January 7, 1997, Kenneth Sobkowich of
Mandeville, Louisiana passed away. Beloved husband of Marlene Plaska Sobkowich;
father of Michelle Sobkowich, Marcie S. Litchfield and Marnie Sobkowich;
son of Steve and Ada "Nellie" Lewis Sobkowich of Canada; brother
of Irene Sobkowich. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and

SOKOLOSKY - Lillian Sokolosky, aged 79 years, passed away at the Foothills
Hospital, Calgary, AB, on July 2, 1997. Lillian was predeceased by her
husband Michael in 1982. Lillian was not just a good wife, mother and
grandmother, she was a great wife, mother and grandmother. She leaves
behind, her daughters, Wilma (Larry) Percival, and Carol (John) Cottam;
sons, Wayne, Victor (Effie) and Dale (Patti) Sokolosky; grandchildren,
Leah, Torri, Steven and John Cottam, Jason, Zenon, Shawna Sokolosky, and
Michelle Percival; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jesse Cottam; two sisters,
Amelia Polson and Martha Scott; and one brother Emil Schafer. Funeral

SOLBACH - Kurt Eugen passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Saturday,
December 13, 1997at the age of 67 years, with his wife Edeltraut of forty-four
years at his bedside. He leaves tomourn his son Wolfgang; and daughter
Marion Whitmore; as well as his two favoritegrandchildren, Christopher
and Michelle. He will also be missed by his brother Erwin(Esperanza) Solbach
of El Paso, Texas; and his sister Ingrid (Rolf) Baptist of Gunn, Alberta.
Hewas a very caring, loving and gentle parent. He loved to hear and play

SOMERVILLE - Mrs. Ethel Belle Somerville of Calgary, passed away at the
Bethany Care Centre Calgary on Tuesday, July 22, 1997 at the age of 90
years. Ethel is survived by a daughter and son, Lola and Keith Scruggs,
and Rae and Mary Somerville; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister Clara Dinsley of Lanigan, Saskatchewan.

SOMERVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Marie Somerville of Calgary, passed away at the
RockyviewGeneral Hospital on Friday, November 28, 1997 at the age of 97
years. Mrs. Somerville wasborn in Chicago, Illinois on June 30, 1900 and
came to Calgary in 1908 with her parents, Georgeand Esther Bock Smith.
Mrs. Somerville was educated as an accountant at the Canada BusinessCollege
and worked for Birks Jewellers. She later left to manage Wiltshire Farms
and wasmarried in 1934. She was a past member of the Earl Grey Golf Club
and Calgary Local Councilof Women. She is survived by her long-time companion
and friend, Lita Garbino; a cousin Mrs.Betty Bock; Graeme and Catherine
Somerville; Malcolm and Norma Somerville; and Aileen andDonne Smith. Mrs.
Somerville was predeceased by her husband George L. Somerville,November
13, 1979 and her sister Esther Lorraine Honens, December 3, 1992. Funeral

SONDERGAARD - Reg. No. 14695 Sondergaard, Arne (Sandy) retired RCMP officer,
passed away suddenly at his residence. He was born November 25, 1923,
Holstbro (Hjerm) Denmark. Sandy is survived by his loving wife Myrtle
and three sons, Arne Jr. of Bethel, Alaska, Bruce and Nicole of Ottawa,
Mark and Carla of Calgary; and daughter-in-law Janet Sondergaard of Calgary.
He was predeceased by his youngest son Donald in 1986, his parents, Lars
Christian and Bodil, and brothers, Chris, Svend, Ernest and Andrew. Sandy
is also survived by his special grandchildren, Kevin of Calgary, Lis and
Kim of Ottawa, Jason of Calgary; sisters, Else of Denmark, Inger of Warner,
Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sandy began his career with
the RCMP Regina Training Depot, and Rockcliff, Ontario. After numerous
postings in Saskatchewan and Alberta he retired after twenty-five years
of service in 1970. Sandy also worked for Atco Structures and the Corp
of Commissionaires in Calgary. After retirement he spent his new life
enjoying his grandchildren, yard, travelling and socializing with his
numerous friends. "Sandy" was a very special person who touched
people in so many wonderful ways. He will be deeply missed but, we all
know that he will be with us in our hearts always. Rest in peace Sandy!

SOODEEN - C. Brian Soodeen, passed away at his residence on November
17, 1997 at the age of 66 years. Brian was born in Trinidad and came to
Canada in 1967 as a Petroleum Engineer and a Geologist. While he was employed
with the National Energy Board, Brian received his Canadian Citizenship.
He was a Professor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
Brian is survived by a son Jason, and a daughter Jessica, both of Calgary.
He is also survived by cousins, Pamela Soodeen of Mississauga, Ontario,
Tyrone Soodeen of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Trevor Soodeen of Barrie,
Ontario; as well as numerous other relatives in Canada, West Indies and

SORGE - Constance Mae (Connie) Sorge, beloved wife of Wayne of Calgary,
passed away atthe Peter Lougheed Hospital on Friday, December 5, 1997
at the age of 46 years. Besides herloving loving husband, Connie is survived
by her parents Rosanna Chalmers and husband BillBerkey of Calgary. Two
brothers, Gary and wife Rita Chalmers of Comox, British Columbia,Garth
and wife Maxine Chalmers of Whitecourt, Alberta and sister, Lauren and
husband JimGladden of Medford, Oregon as well as many nieces, nephews
and good friends. Connie ispredeceased by her father, Lawrence Chalmers.
Connie will be remembered most for hergenerous and loving nature. Always
supportive, patient and understanding she managed to drawfrom an unending
well of inner strength. Though sadly missed, Connie will never be forgotten
bythose lives she touched. She will remain as she always has been, our

SOROFF - Julia Stefania was taken away suddenly on Monday, November 24,
1997 at Cranbrook, British Columbia at the age of 66 years. She will be
sadly missed, ever remembered and loved by her husband George; two sons
and a daughter-in-law, Douglas Soroff, Glenn and Cathy Soroff; a daughter
and son-in-law, Arlene and Gene Prosin; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Matthew,
Jordan, Brett, Kristina, Michael Soroff and Jason Prosin; brothers and
sisters, Steve Kapalka, Julius and his wife Dee Kapalka, John and his
wife Marianne Kapalka, Pat and her husband Robert Murphy, Jane Kapalka,
and Lawrence and his wife Patricia Kapalka; a brother and sister-in-law,
Albina and Renaldo Reghenas; as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces
and good friends. Julie was predeceased by her parents, Stefania and Joseph
Kapalka, in 1967 and 1971, and her grandson Steven Soroff in 1995. Julie
was born in Coleman, Alberta on December 23, 1930. She graduated from
nursing in 1952 before marrying George Soroff on August 22, 1953. With
her family, she lived in Calgary, Pincher Creek, Edson and Valleyview
before returning to Calgary with George in retirement. While in Valleyview
she renewed her nursing certification to return to the hospital work she
so enjoyed. She was a kind, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister,
auntie and friend. She was always willing to give unselfishly of herself
to help others. She will be remembered as taking the little extra time
to buy something or do something special for everyone who was close to
her. We will always keep fond memories close to our hearts. Relatives

SPANKIE - Mrs. Mildred Ethel Spankie (nee Dunlap) passed away peacefully
at the Intercare/Brentwood Care Centre on November 5, 1997. Mildred was
born at Bowden, Alberta on July 2, 1913 and moved to Calgary with her
family in 1944. She is survived by her loving family, three daughters,
Helen Bording (Bev) of Nanaimo, B.C., Marie Dustan (Bill), Louise Hacock
(Bob); a son Ronald Spankie (Janet), all of Calgary; thirteen grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren, three sisters, and a brother. She was predeceased
by her husband of sixty years, Alex, on November 5, 1992. Memorial Services

SPARKS - Percy J. Sparks, beloved husband of Mrs. Magdalene (Lena) Sparks
of Calgary, passed away at the Agape Manor on October 20, 1997 at the
age of 90 years. Percy was born in Innisfail in 1906, and farmed until
entering the trucking industry in 1954, where he worked until his retirement
at the age of seventy-two years. He will be lovingly missed by his family
and many friends. Besides his loving wife Magdalene, Percy is survived
by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Glenn and Helen Sparks of Kelowna,
and Floyd Sparks of Calgary. He is also survived by five grandchildren,
several great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Reeves of Calgary, and
Ethel Blenkhorn of Trochu, and their families. Percy was predeceased by

SPEECHLEY - Albert Charles Speechley, born in 1926, passed away at the
Peter Lougheed Hospital on September 11, 1997. Albert will be lovingly
remembered by his wife of forty-eight years, Frances; their daughter Catherine
(Jim) Campbell. He is also survived by his son Owen. He will be remembered
by his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Emily and Laura. Albert is also survived
by his sister Vera Field of Brantford, Ontario and his brother Thomas
Speechley of London, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother
and two sisters. Albert was employed by Texaco/Esso for many years. He

Hat, Alberta,passed away peacefully in her Calgary home on December 11,
1997 surrounded by her lovingfamily. She leaves to mourn her passing,

(Bernie) of Calgary; two daughters, Margaret (Ken) Blair of Medicine Hatand
Gwen (Darryl) Whillans of Calgary; as well as one dear daughter-in-law
Maureen of RedDeer. She had thirteen grandchildren, Stephen, Sandy (Dean),
Bob, Tracy (George), Shelly(Jason), Tracy (Mark), Mike (Kelly), Tammy,
Jared, Spencer, Lindsay, Kristian and Scott; andseven great-grandchildren,
Graham, Ginny, Trevor, Tyler, Giles, Easton and Cooper, who sheloved dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband Walter in April of 1975, her eldest
sonMichie of Red Deer on June 29, 1992 and grandson Chad on July 30, 1993.

SPILLER - Rolla Cecil (Cec) Spiller of Cochrane, passed away at the Foothills
Hospital onThursday, December 25, 1997 at the age of 85 years. His love

SPINNEY - Andrew Wayne Spinney, beloved husband of Caroline Spinney of
Calgary, passed away tragically at the Foothills Hospital on October 26,
1997 as a result of a traffic accident at the age of 33 years. Andrew
is survived by his mother Sheila Spinney, his father Robert Spinney, and
his special friend Carol Hansen, all of Calgary. He is also survived by
two brothers, Dennis Spinney of Edmonton, and Richard Spinney of Calgary;
his mother and father-in-law, Dr. Marian and Margaret Tuszewski Troy of
Calgary. Andy graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with Distinction and a minor
in Computer Science. Andy worked for G.E. Harris Canada. Funeral Services

SPLIEDT - Bethel Rose, born July 7, 1913 passed away September 4, 1997
at the Strathmore Hospital at the age of 84 years. She leaves to mourn
a daughter Marie (Uwe) Johannsen; four grandchildren, Wendy (Terry) Sydoryk,
Heidi (Marc) Frederick, Adrian (Lindy) Spliedt, Bobbie Jo Spliedt (Nick);
six great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kristen, Michael, Joshua, Chelsea and
Ross. Bethel is also survived by two sisters, Verna (Kenny) Halverson
and Marjorie Knight. She was predeceased by husband Herman 1996, son Robert

SPOKES - Mr. Sidney Walter Spokes, beloved husband of Mrs. Clara Spokes
of Calgary, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Sarcee Auxiliary
Hospital on July 6, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Mr. Spokes was born in
Regina on January 14, 1909. He was raised in an orphanage and had many
fond memories. Sidney was a sports enthusiast, as he was an umpire for
many years. Besides his loving wife, Sidney is also survived by a son
and daughter-in-law, Terry and Linda Spokes of Rockyford, Alberta; three
grandchildren, Steven Spokes and his wife Melody of Airdrie, Terry Edward
Spokes and his wife Michelle, Chris Spokes and his wife Bonny, all of
Calgary; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a niece
Karen and her husband Dick Elliot of Bliss, Idaho; and a nephew Tim and
his wife Pam Conant of Dietrich, Idaho. A Reception in Sidney's memory
will be held at 20 Whiteram Close N.E. on Thursday, July 10, 1997 at 2:00
