1997: Deaths - Fi
FINCH - Derek Charles Finch passed
away at his residence on November 11, 1997 at the age of 58 years. Derek
is survived by his loving wife Lorna; three daughters, Michelle (Ken) Baker,
Valerie (Darrel) Foat and Christine; and three grandchildren, Jennifer,
Nicole and Bradley. Also survived by his brother Allan; sister Rita; and
several nieces and nephews. Derek was born in 1939 in London, England. He
enlisted in the Parachute Regiment in England from 1957 to 1960. Derek joined
the Calgary Police Service in 1966 and retired in 1996 after thirty years
of service. He was well-loved and respected and will be sadly missed by
his family and friends. He was a kind, caring, sensitive and generous man
who was always there for his family. Derek had a passion and love of hobbies
which included woodworking, model airplanes and reading. At Derek's request,

FINDLAY - Naomi Louise Findlay (formerly Herbig and Davis), beloved wife
of TomFindlay, High River, died after a valiant struggle with cancer at
the age of 87 years onDecember 9, 1997. Besides her husband, Naomi is
survived by her daughters, Louise (Nels)Jacobsen, Olds, Alta., Muriel
(Don) Hoover, Edmonton and Bobbi Scarlett, Calgary; hergrandchildren,
Lisa (Dan) Parsons, Scott and Niki Hoover, Jodi Scarlett and RyanJacobsen;
and her great-grandchild Nikko Parsons. Naomi was a nurse for sixty-five
yearsat Olds and High River Hospitals and was dedicated to her causes
such as the Ladies'Auxiliary to the High River Hospital, Cansurmount and
Unifarm. Funeral Services will beheld at the High River United Church
on Saturday, December 13, at 1:30 p.m., the Rev.Susan Lukey officiating.

FINLAYSON - Martha Brown Finlayson (nee Crosbie) passed away at the Agape
Manor Hospice on November 4, 1997. Mom leaves behind a great empty void
in the lives of her children, son John Finlayson and his wife Joanne;
and daughter Janis Love and her husband Jim. Nana was a loving grandmother
to her four grandchildren, Kelsey, Krista, Jeff and Travis. Martha is
also survived by her sister Marion Alexander and her husband Bill. Martha
was predeceased by her husband John on December 25, 1994. Mom was just
starting to adjust to a new life without her loving husband when she was
diagnosed with cancer. She faced this with great courage, a positive attitude,
and unbelievable sense of independence and above all else, with dignity.
Mom believed coming to this country as a young war bride made her a strong,
independent person. She certainly was that. We will miss you mom! Rest
easy. At Martha's request, there will be no Service, she will be laid
to rest beside her husband John at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. If friends

FISCHER - Clara Fischer passed away suddenly but peacefully on October
6, 1997. Clara joined the family of Margaret and Art Davis in 1944 and
became the confidante of all of the family - including children, Diane,
Gail, Brian and Dorothy; and grandchildren, Dermott, Meghann, Lewis, Arthur,
Frank, Lauren, and Gillian - for all of those fifty-three years. She was
a friend, an anchor and a beloved companion to us all. We will miss her
so much. She is survived by one brother Roy (Irene) of Richmound, SK;
three sisters-in-law, Ida Fischer, Carrie Fischer, Mary Fischer, all of
Medicine Hat; eleven nephews, ten nieces, numerous great-nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her parents, August and Magdalina, one sister Magdalina
Tschritter, four brothers, August, Jack, Philip and Bill, one brother-in-law
Dave Tschritter, one sister-in-law Martha Fischer. Clara was born on June
30, 1922 in Irvine, Alberta and attended school at Ehman and Hilda School.
A Celebration of Clara's life will take place at the HERITAGE FUNERAL

FISCHER - Edith Fischer passed away peacefully at Central Park Lodge
in her 95th year. Beloved mother of daughter Marjorie (Ken) Campbell;
and a son James. She also will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren,
Barbara (Cavin), Shelley (Rickey), Howard (Judy), Margaret (Glen) and
David. Her four great-grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Nicholas, Jonathan;
and her sister Bea of South Burnaby, British Columbia. A Family Service

FISHER - Jacqueline Carole Fisher, age 26 years, passed away suddenly
on Friday, July 18, 1997 in Calgary. She is predeceased by her grandparents,

sister Karen (August 5, 1972); Jacky's sister's fiance Bob Drake (May,
1997); Aunty Bernie Almassy (July 11, 1990); Aunty Eveline Johnson (November
20, 1993). She is survived by her father Robert Fisher; brother Jerrod
(Brenda) Fisher, all of Regina; sister Eloise Fisher and her son Aaron
of Faro, Yukon; mother Carole Fisher of Southey, Sask.; grandmother Alice
Huber of Bangor, Sask.; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and many good

FISHER - Passed away at the Pincher Creek Hospital on Saturday, December
6, 1997, Laura Ione Fisher, at the age of 76 years, beloved wife of Mr.
Arthur Fisher of Pincher Creek, Alberta. Laura Ione was born in Maple
Creek, Saskatchewan on April 27, 1921. She married Art Fisher on August
22, 1942, and they raised seven children, Ron and Karen, Vonda and Guy,
Gary and Diane, Bob and Judy, Brenda and Don, Rhonda and Pete, and Darcy
and Karin. She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and eighteen
great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother Jack. Laura Ione
had a deep appreciation for life, and a strong love for her family. She
touched numerous people over her many years and she taught school from
1961 to 1986. She will be fondly remembered by all those who knew her.
Laura Ione was predeceased by her parents and one brother Bill. A Memorial
Service will be held at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Pincher Creek,
on Tuesday, December 9, 1997 at 3:00 p.m., Fr. Bob Dielessen officiating.

FITZGERALD - With grace, faith and dignity, surrounded by his loving
family and in his own home, Armond John ended his time on earth on Tuesday,
June 24, 1997. Armond is survived by Patricia, his loving wife of forty-four
years, and his seven children, Michelle (Ralf Kuntzemann), Maureen (Richard
Hindmarch), Sharon (Dr. Curtis Rytz), Sean (Lesley nee Luft), Suzanne
(Jacob Reichbart), Patricia (Dr. Shaun Murphy), and Jennifer. He is also
survived by his brother Dr. Desmond FitzGerald (Evelyn) of San Francisco,
Gerald of London, ON. and Terrance or Orillia, ON. Armond also leaves
ten grandchildren. Armond was born at the home of his parents, John and
Gertrude, of Toronto, ON, on Boxing Day, 1927. He attended St. Michael's
College (high school) and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with
honours from the University of Toronto. Armond was a natural leader with
a deep respect for the people with whom he worked. With quick wit, warmth
and a sense of humour, he enjoyed a career of significant responsibility.
After thirty-five years, he retired in 1986 as Vice President and General
Manager of Carling O'Keefe Breweries in Calgary. Armond served as Director
of Alberta Brewers Agents Ltd. from 1965 to 1986 and was President for
seven terms. Throughout his life Armond focused his abilities on helping
the community. He was Chairman of the Board of CareWest, and was a longtime
Board member of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary. Most recently he
devoted his time to the Calgary Residential Services Society. Armond raised
his son and six daughters with infinite patience, unfailing generosity
and unconditional love. He always taught by his own example, and his lessons
were to appreciate the dignity of every person, to contribute to those
in need and to understand the human predicament with humour. Armond's

FITZGERALD - It is with great sadness we announce the death of Lorna
"June" Fitzgerald, who passed away suddenly at Gresham, Oregon,
on June 3, 1997 at the age of 79 years. June was born on June 12, 1917
in Lethbridge, AB. She attended school in Cardston, AB. and obtained her
hairdressing certificate in 1936 in Calgary. She married Arch Fitzgerald
on October 4, 1937 in Calgary. They moved to Medicine Hat, AB. in 1938
and to Calgary in 1951. June held many positions in the Latter-Day Saints
(Mormon) Church in her lifetime and was well known for her expertise in
making homemade chocolates. She conducted many seminars demonstrating
this art. June is the loving mother of two daughters and a son-in-law,
Dianne and Eldon Rasmussen of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Valerie Fitzgerald
of Calgary; her son and daughter-in-law John and Bonnie Fitzgerald of
Gresham, Oregon; as well as eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
June is also survived by her three sisters, Melba McMullin of Vancouver,
B.C., Wanda Duce of Lethbridge, AB., and Eunice Robuliak of Mississauga,
ON.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was
predeceased by her husband Arch, in 1980 and also by two sisters, a brother
and her parents. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Those

FITZMARTYN - Mrs. Alice Gertrude Fitzmartyn (nee Noble) of Calgary, passed
away at the Sarcee Nursing Home on September 17, 1997, at the age of 84
years. Alice was very proud that she was born and educated in Calgary
and resided here all of her life. She was a founding member of St. Anthony's
Parish and worked at the Credit Union for many years. She will be fondly
remembered by her son Dennis and his children, her daughter-in-law JoAnne,
JoAnne's husband Tony Pozdin, and her beloved grandson Bob Fitzmartyn.
Alice is also survived by her sister Kay Fisher of Toronto, her sisters-in-law,
June Fitzmartyn of Calgary and Mary Lane of Victoria; as well as many
nieces and nephews and their families. Alice was predeceased by her husband
Jack, her son Greg, her brother George Noble, sisters, Mable Nelson, Ivy
Fletcher, Mary Veillieux, and Agnes Galloway. Relatives and friends are

FLAHERTY - Dr. A. Elizabeth Flaherty, beloved wife of Tim Flaherty of
Calgary, passed away at the her residence on Tuesday, October 21, 1997
at the age of 46 years. Elizabeth was born February 11, 1951 at Glace
Bay, Nova Scotia. She received her B.A. and B.Ed. from St. Francis Xavier
University in Antigonish, N.S. in 1973; her Master of Arts degree from
Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington; and her Ph.D. from the University
of Alberta in 1994. Elizabeth and Tim were married in Portland, Maine
in 1973. During the same year they moved to Calgary and she joined the
Calgary Separate School district and taught at several schools before
being appointed Acting Principal at St. Anthony in 1981. Since then she
has served as principal of Holy Cross Annex, Father Damien School, St.
Bernadette School, St. Rupert School and St. Thomas Aquinas School. Elizabeth
was actively involved in the parish community with St. Bonaventure Catholic
Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was involved with
the Baptismal Preparation Program. Besides her loving husband, Elizabeth
is survived by her daughter Mary Beth. She is also survived by her brother
Joseph McKinnon of Dartmouth, N.S.; her sisters, Barbara McKinnon of Halifax,
N.S., Madelon Mundy of Boston, Massachusetts, and Leone Parkes of Victoria,
B.C.; her aunt Sister Mary Norbert of Antigonish, N.S.; as well as by
several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Leo and

FLUET - Owen Michael Fluet of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital
after a courageous battle with cancer on June 12, 1997 at the age of 35.

FOGARASI - John C. passed quietly away at the age of 63 at his home June
28, 1997 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria.
John and Maria escaped Communist Hungary in 1956 immigrating to Canada
and enrolling at the University of Alberta from which they both graduated
in Petroleum Engineering. They became Canadian citizens in 1962. John
enjoyed a successful engineering career over many years in the Canadian
oil industry and abroad. Eminently practical, he applied his skills to
drilling, completion, testing and operation of oil and gas wells. He will
be remembered and missed by his many friends in the industry and the community.

FOLEY - Lyla May. On October 25, 1997, Mrs. Lyla Foley of Edmonton, formerly
of the Calgary area (Shephard), passed away. She leaves to mourn, three
sons, Lorne, Dean and Bill; one sister Gladys Robinson; one brother Gordon
MacGregor; longtime friend Mrs. Helen Kilroe of Calgary; grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. She was preceeded by her
husband John Foley in 1953. We would like to thank Dr. Tom Ranieri and
the excellent nurses and caregivers of Mother's at the Misericordia Hospital,

FONG - Mrs. Mee Sen Fong of Calgary passed away at the Agape Manor Hospice

FORSTER - Margaret Olga, beloved wife of Mr. Bert Forster, passed away
peacefully at Foothills Hospital on October 25, 1997 at the age of 66
years. Besides her loving husband, she will be lovingly remembered by
her son Nick (Tina); her sister Mary (Allan) Mac Donald of Nelson, BC;
four nieces, one nephew, as well as numerous cousins. Margaret devoted
her time and ability to A.R.B.I., Red Cross and "Meals on Wheels".

FORSYTHE - Mr. James (Jim) Scott, beloved husband of Adair Forsythe of
Crossfield, Alberta, passed away at the Didsbury District Health Centre
on July 21, 1997 at the age of 59 years. Jim was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan
on July 29, 1937 and moved to the family farm at Crossfield in 1952 where
he resided until his death. He was a member of the Crossfield Masonic
Lodge No. 48 A.F. and A.M., Starlight Chapter No. 109, O.E.S., and the
Crossfield Legion No. 113. Jim was also very involved with the Alberta
Amateur Hockey Association. He was a shareholder of the Calgary Exhibition
and Stampede and was currently serving on the beef cattle committee. Jim
worked as a volunteer in the community of Crossfield, most recently with
the Crossfield Farmers Market. Besides his loving wife Adair, Jim is also
survived by three sons, Scott and Debbie of Calgary, Kim and Noreen of
Las Vegas, Robbie and Kristina of Calgary; three daughters, Carla and
Peter of Kelowna, BC, Corrie and Bob of Yoho, BC, and Christina of Vancouver,
BC; and four grandchildren, Josh, Ashley, Cody and Nicolas. He is also
survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Bob Hunter; nephew Ken
and niece Susan and her husband Chris Grant; as well as numerous aunts,
uncles and cousins in Northern Ireland and on the Prairies. He was predeceased
by his father Edward in 1976 and his mother Ida in 1996. At Jim's request,
there will be a private Service. Relatives and friends are invited to
meet with the family at the Crossfield Community Centre on Friday, July
25, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made

FOSSLI - Anna Fossli, born 1909 in Norway, beloved wife of Michael, passed
away on September 8, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Besides her loving husband
of sixty-five years, she will be sadly missed by her sons, Willy, Audun
and Norman; daughters, Ingrid and Anne Marie; eleven grandchildren and
ten great-grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered in Norway
by her sisters, Klara and Marie, as well as a brother Malvin. She was
predeceased by her brothers, Johannes and Johan, and this Spring by her

FOSTER - Allan Leroy Foster of Torrington, Alberta, was born on December
17, 1941 and passed away in his home in Torrington, June 1, 1997. Al is
survived by his wife Beverly; and children, daughter Anna Foster of Torrington
and boyfriend Marty, son Tom Foster of Torrington, son Allan Foster Jr.
of Craigmyle and wife Rose, daughter Rhonda Bruce of Millarville and husband
Daryl, Heath Strub and wife Theresa of Sundre; and numerous grandchildren;
two sisters, Betty Anderson of Calgary and husband Doug, Vera Gauthier
of Calgary and husband James; one brother Martin Foster of Didsbury and
wife Heather; also one predeceased brother Dale Eric, and one sister Mary

FOWLIE - Mrs. Gladys Ione Fowlie passed away peacefully at the Mayfair
Care Centre on October 23, 1997 at the age of 86 years. Predeceased by
her husband Allan in 1982, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Garth and Diane Fowlie of Vancouver; three grandchildren, Louann (Jeff)
Guerin of Grand Forks, B.C., Paul Fowlie, and Samantha Fowlie of Vancouver;
and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Shane Guerin; as well as a sister

FOWLIE - James Gordon Fowlie, beloved husband of Chris Fowlie, passed
away on Thursday, June 19, 1997 at the age of 72 years. He is also survived
by a son Jamie; two daughters, Melody and Beverly; two grandchildren,
James and Samantha; his mother Janet Garry, Winnipeg, Manitoba; a sister
Mary Fowlie; two brothers, Tom and Bill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Jim was raised and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
served with the R.C.A.F. for thirty-one years retiring as a Warrant Officer
in 1974 to Calgary. He was a Past Master of Glenbow Lodge No. 184 A.F.
& A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Calgary, and for twelve
years was the Secretary-Registrar of the Valleys in Calgary A & A.S.R.
He was Coroneted by the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Masons in 1990
and received his 33 Degree; a life member of Hamilton Valley A & A.S.R.;
a Past First Principal of Alberta Chapter R.A.M., member of Cyprus Preceptory
No. 33, member of The Red Cross of Constantine, served as Worthy Matron
of Chinook Chapter No. 133 O.E.S. twice, also of Arnprior Chapter O.E.S.
Jim was also active with the Boy Scouts of Canada for over twenty years.
He was an active member of the United Church of Canada and served in various
offices from a Sunday School teacher to an Elder. Jim was a member of

FOX - Alfred Fox, beloved husband of Mrs. Lillian Fox of Carbon, AB,
passed away at theDrumheller District Hospital on December 15, 1997 at
the age of 83 years. He is the lovingfather to Carol Ann Fox of Carbon,
AB; and brother to William (Nancy) Fox of Vancouver,B.C. He is also survived
by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers,Ernie and
Benjamin, and by his sister Margaret Lowther. Alfred was born in Drumheller
onMarch 4, 1914 and lived most of his life in Carbon where he owned and
operated coal minesfor many years. He was a member of the Carbon Masonic
Lodge since 1961 and served aterm as Deputy Grand Master. Alfred served
on the Carbon Village Council for three years,followed by a three year
term as Mayor. He was an avid hockey fan and baseball fan.Alfred will
